Sassafras Reflection ササフラスの反射

 

The January thaw
is in full recital,
with a steady
morning rain
making mirror
out of driveway,
providing pallet
in grey tones
for the Sassafras.

As a youth
I learned
to identify
its leaves,
elliptical,
often with two
and three lobes
joined by aromatic twigs
that smelled fresh
when snapped,
like a spicey rootbeer.


一月の雪どけは
絶頂の独奏会
安定した朝雨が
ドライブウェイを
鏡にして
ササフラスのために
グレー調のパレットを
創っている。

私が若かったころ、
葉を見極める方法を
学んだ、
楕円形の、
たいていの場合
2つか3つの裂片が
いい香りのする小枝で
一体となっているのは
ポキッと折った時に
スパイシーなルートビアーのような
新鮮なにおいがした。
