Blue sky and ice

are putting the

exclaimation mark

on our weather

this December.

It has been freezing

for nearly the whole month

and now it's said

that three days from now

on New Year's Eve

we will start to warm

before the rain moves in

over the weekend,

making it our New Year's first

official January thaw.

青い空と氷が

この１２月の

天気に

びっくりマークを

つけている。

ほぼ一カ月の間

ずっと凍っていたが

新年まであと３日の今、

暖かくなり始めると聞いた

週末に雨が来る前に。

これが正式な

新年の最初の

１月の雪解けになる。

Sunset in the Garden 庭での黄昏

Sunset in the Garden

goes unnoticed too often,

just time moving,

horizons yawning

and the gradual

darkening

turning colors vivid,

then washing them

violet before gray,

as if the sky were

holding its breath

before passing;

before leading us

to the peace

and to the clarity

that the cold winter sky

offers all us,

eventually.

庭での黄昏

殆どの場合気づかれずに

時間だけ流れていく

地平線はあくびをし

ゆっくり暗くなっていく

色鮮やかに変わりながら、

そして灰色になる前に

紫に洗浄する

まるで空が

通り過ぎる前に

息を止めるように。

平和と

冷たい冬の空が

清澄を

くれる前に。

Boxing Day Green ボクシングデーの緑

Light flurries drifted across the garden this morning,
leaving an additional trace of snow
above the three inches that has aged well
during a week of cold and intermittent sun
that gave us a White Christmas
highlighted by the green of the White Pines,
Junipers, Cedars, and Spruce;
while this little Sedum flashes its green too,
a sufficient reminder of what awaits us
at Winter's end.

今朝軽い小雪が庭を飛んだ、
ホワイトパイン、杜松、ヒマラヤスギ、
 トウヒの緑によって引き立てられ
ホワイトクリスマスになった
冷たく断続的な太陽の一週間の間に
年をとった3インチの上に
更なる雪の跡を残して。
その間この小さなセダムも緑を煌めかせていた、
冬の終わりに
待っているのを思い起こさせるのに
十分なほど。

The Cone Heads コーンヘッド

The Cone Heads came to visit our garden yesterday.

The leader came first, followed by the rest

that seemed to appear as if birthed

by the endless drifts of snow.

昨日コーンヘッドたちが私たちの庭にやってきた。

まずはリーダーがきて、他の者たちが続いた

まるで限りない雪から

産まれてきたように。

December Blizzard 12月の雪嵐

The first blizzard of the season

has been blowing snow all day

and into the night...

providing a soft

and dynamic frame

for our shining tree.

今季初の雪嵐

一日中雪が吹き続け

夜にまで及んだ…

A chipmonk stood here

before the first big snow

of December;

pausing in the powder

for just a moment

before leaping ahead.

シマリスがここに立っていた

大きな嵐の前に

粉の中で

一瞬とまり

飛躍していった。

December Mornings 12月の朝

December mornings
can be brighter
than the warmest
of summer days;
the snow like a million
tiny frozen mirrors
sending light everywhere
to battle the lengthening shadows.

12月の朝は
一番暖かい
夏よりも
明るい時がある
何万という
小さな凍った鏡のような雪
影の長さと競って
光を放ってくれる。

The baskets that held this year's annuals

hang empty above the woodpile,

their flowers a wilted tangled mess

weakly clinging to the soil

that has joined the compost pile,

together awaiting a future use...

while each log, split or not

too, awaits its use,

to provide us with the comfort of warmth

and the pleasure of dancing colors;

like dormant seeds each piece of wood

promises fine moments in a season passing.

今年の一年草が植えられていたバスケット

薪の山の上にからっぽで釣り下がり、

その花たちはしなびて

土の上で絡まって

堆肥の山と一緒になった

共に将来また使われることを待ちながら...

ログも割られたのも、割られなかったのも

その出番を待ち、

暖かさという癒しと

踊る色たちの歓びを私たちにくれる

まるで休眠している木が

季節が変わるとき

美しい一瞬を約束してくれるように。

French Pussy Willow Bud フレンチプシーウィロー（やなぎ）の芽

An isolated bud

rises from the

frozen terrain,

ducks beneath

the teeth of deer

and awaits a spring

that is more than

a season away.

一人ぼっちの芽が

凍った地形から

出現する

鹿の歯に

噛まれないよう身を屈め

次の次のシーズンである

春を待つ。

The Weed Brings Yellow 雑草が黄色を運んでくれる

The weed brings yellow

to the snow smattered lawn

that has begun to brown

with the cold days

and even colder nights

sucking the life from the earth,

albeit temporary.

雑草が黄色を運んできた

今だけであるが

地上から命を吸い取り

寒い日々と

寒い夜によって

雪に覆われた

茶色くなった芝生に。

The last of the leeks

were harvested today

in preparation for

a delicious curry.

最後のリーク

今日収穫した

おいしいカレーを

つくるために。

Dried Old Buds 乾いた古い芽

Dried old buds gathered together

long after their playing days:

the season is over

and the field covered with snow.

長く続いた遊びの時間を終えて

乾いた古い芽が集まった

シーズンは終わった

そしてフィールドは雪に覆われている。

December Snow 12月の雪

Just days after other flowers

laughed at the weakness

of November's subtle chill,

December has taken their color

and washed it bland,

brown and beige,

turning the rainbow off

like a light switch gone dark,

promising even shorter days now

like a sled running into a crevice,

farther and farther from the light,

colder, more frozen and white.

他の花たちが

11月の寒さの弱さを

笑った数日後

12月が色を奪い去り

平凡にしてしまった

茶色とベージュ

まるで電気が消えたように

虹をけしてしまった、

まるでそりが割れ目に向かっていくように

日はどんどん短くなり

光からさらに遠くなり

もっと寒く氷白くなる。
