We think this is a fine blue
counterpart to yesterday's
Cardinal Flower,
another wildflower
blooming late summer
and into fall.

At the edge of the

partial shade garden

this red wildflower

has found a home

among the Chinese Lanterns

and Peppermint.

半日蔭の庭の

Chicken Mushroom マスタケ

We think this is a Chicken Mushroom

or maybe a Hen of the Woods,

but without an expert taking the first bite,

we pass on these seemingly choice edibles

that people have said taste like chicken.

マスタケだと思うけれど

いやそれともマイタケか、

たぶん見たところ

チキンの味だといわれる

Christmas Lights in August 8月のクリスマスライト

This Bushy Aster

reminds me of the lights

that drape bare branches

of city trees,

as the Christmas Season

descends on a grey

and darkening world.

This annual hangs from a basket

that greets our front porch view

and brings the Humming Birds

whose long beak provide them

the priveledge of tasting

the treats deep center.

gave us this Japanese Maple

that is thriving among the mint.

Common Mullein ビロードモウズイカ

The semi-silhouette

of Verbascum thapsus

divides the Eastern sky

as the evening descends

upon Michigan.

The taller stem rises

nearly two metres

and the base

of this wildflower

features velvety leaves

that Indians and early settlers

used to line for warmth

their shoes and socks.

The Second Blooming 2回目の開花

The wild Honeysuckle returned
for a second time this summer
showing her delicacy
and sharing her fragrance,
but the blooms are so rare
that each one is savored.

The Unknown Volunteer 知られざる客

He surprised me

as he ran toward me

from the edge of the wood.

His thin, long leaves

and long skinny stalk

promised to bring along

more friends.

I asked him,

"What is your name?"

but he didn't know.

彼が林のはじから

私の方に向って走ってきたので

私はびっくりした。

彼の細い長い葉と

長い痩せた茎は

もっとたくさんの友達を

連れてくると約束した。

それで私は彼に聞いた。

「君の名前は何？」

だが、彼は知らなかった。

Late Blooming Delphinium 遅咲きのデルフィニウム

The Delphinium clusters

in a linear, sequential pattern

as the blooms climb the stalk

that is frequently no match

for the weight of the flowers.

Yesterday's Harvest 昨日の収穫

Tomatoes as big as dinosaurs

and the smaller pears

are beginning to ripen

and we enjoyed this red one

in a tasty guacamole last night,

by adding onions, avocado, cilantro,

garlic, pepper, lime juice,

and a wee bit of olive oil.

ワカモレにして食べた

The Endangered Thistle 絶滅寸前のアザミ

This globe shaped thistle

is less common,

declining in numbers

yet an invited guest

in our garden...

we will see how many friends

he brings next year.

この地球のかたちをしたアザミ

あまり見かけない

数は少なくなっているけれど

それでも私たちの庭では

招かれざる客

来年はどれだけの

友達を連れてくるだろう。

Light and Shadow 光と影

A fine yellow mirror

holding light and shadow,

turns a blade of green leaf

into the sword

that would slice

this morning's sun's rays.

高質な黄色い鏡

光と影を反射し

緑の刃のような葉を

今朝の太陽の光線を

切ってしまう

剣にかえる。

Wild Cranberries ワイルドクランベリー

Only a few Wild Cranberries

remain hanging from their stems,

for the birds or deer

came early for dinner.

ほんの少しのワイルドクランベリーしか

枝につらさがっていない

鳥やシカが

夕食に早く来てしまうから。

The Yellow Loosestrife Circle Flower

is known for its light brown circle

in its throat,

and for blooming in June and July,

but here in Michigan

this year,

the crowds of blooms are just arriving.

Our Beautiful Caterpillar 私たちの美しいイモムシ

The season of butterflies

is thriving with the cycle full;

some flying, some chewing,

some encapsulating themselves...

all part of a vivid, colorful play

featuring nature sprinkled

with heaven's wonder.

蝶のシーズン

サイクルで成長する

あるものは飛び、あるものは噛んでいる

あるものはカプセルに入っている

みんな光り輝くカラフルな幕の一部で

天の驚嘆すべき

自然の主役である。

ソフトフライドオムレツ

サンデーブランチは
たいていいつも夫が作る
子供たちのために
パンケーキか、あるいは
大人たちのために
卵料理を。

今日は野菜がたくさんあったので
栄養のバランスを考えて
私が下ごしらえをした。

玉ねぎ、ズッキーニ、
マッシュルーム、
庭でとれた甘いチェリートマト。
オリーブオイルでソテーして
十分火が通ったら
卵をその上に落とし、
その上にスイスチーズ
とハバティーチーズを乗せ
溶かした。
塩胡椒をして出来上がり。

今までは卵をあらかじめ
ほぐして、定番オムレツの形で
作っていたけれど、
今年の夏にこの新しい方法を
試してみました。なかなかいけます。

had nearly withered

to stalk and leaf.
