The Chipmunks have a home
with many ways
to come and go
beneath the Spruce,
and Russian Olive;
some routes are hidden
and obscure,
yet this one is adorned
as if Mrs. Chipmunk
had had a hand
in placing accents
and planting moss
to lend their home
some curb appeal,
an inviting design
at a very low cost.

シマリスたちには
トウヒとホソバグミの下に
幾つかの出入りする道のある家がある。
あるルートは
隠れていて良く見えないけれど
これはまるでシマリスの奥さんが
自分の家の外観を素敵に見せ、
お客さんたちを歓迎するように

January Rose 一月のバラ

 

Just a winter rose
that stretches its frame outward,
finding grace simple.

ただの冬のバラなのに
枠を外に向かっていっぱいに広げ、
優雅さとはシンプルであることを発見。

Gnawed Apple 齧られた林檎

 

Last night a deer
had rolled this meal
from beneath a boulder
that sat below an apple tree.

The fruit's once yellow skin
now a weathered reddish brown,
broken and torn by gnawing teeth,
signaling one minor success
in the deer's quest
for sustenance and flavor.

昨夜、鹿が
りんごの木の下の
巨礫から
この食べ物を
転がした。

かつて黄色い肌だった実は
今は赤茶に風化し、

Winter's youth
nestled among the lavender,
tucked-in like a child
beneath a blanket of snow;
and were it not
for its clean green complexion
standing in contrast
to the aged,
silvering,
elderly leaves,
we might have missed this babe.

Northern White Pine ノーザンホワイトパイン

 

Like a starburst,
the White Pine
announces the end
to a short-lived thaw.

Granules of snow
gather in mass,
captured by needles
soft and yearning.

星のように
ホワイトパインは
短い雪解けの
終わりを告げる。

雪の顆粒は
塊となり、
やわらかく切望している
針にとらえられる。

Sassafras Reflection ササフラスの反射

 

The January thaw
is in full recital,
with a steady
morning rain
making mirror
out of driveway,
providing pallet
in grey tones
for the Sassafras.

As a youth
I learned
to identify
its leaves,
elliptical,
often with two
and three lobes
joined by aromatic twigs
that smelled fresh
when snapped,
like a spicey rootbeer.


一月の雪どけは
絶頂の独奏会
安定した朝雨が
ドライブウェイを
鏡にして
ササフラスのために
グレー調のパレットを
創っている。

私が若かったころ、
葉を見極める方法を

楕円形の、
たいていの場合

The Last One Hanging 最後に釣り下がっているもの

 

What may be the saddest leaf in the garden,
is definitely the last one to hang upon
the Yoshino Cherry, Prunus x yedoensis;
for the tree's trunk was attacked,
in what combination we know not;
for it could have been scraped by a small buck
as it rubbed the velvet from its antlers,
the damage inviting a ready disease,
a fungus or other invasion.

The evidence manifested itself
as an open wound
covered with a thick red jelly,
congealed sap, or a resin of sorts
that seemed to lead
to this tree's distinction
of being the first in the garden
to turn its leaves brown,
well before autumn's introduction.

Although we have resigned
to this tree's early demise,
only spring will reveal
whether new life will rise,
or whether the tree will offer
naught but fodder for flame
or perhaps the raw workings
for a new cherry cane.

Though we do now attribute
sadness to this leaf,
reality may, in the end reflect,
the braveness of its beast;
and should the tree recover
in the warming April sun,
we will be the first to bow
to the last one hanging on.

庭で一番寂しそうな葉っぱは
よしの桜、またの名をソメイヨシノに
一番最後に残った葉っぱ
どのような事柄が合わさってなったのか分からないけど、
木の幹が襲われた
もしかしたら小さな雄鹿が
角の角袋をこする時に
傷つけられたのかもしれない
そのダメージから菌か何かが入り、
病気になってしまった。

開いた傷口に
赤いどろどろしたゼリー、
固まった樹液、それとも何かの松脂
に覆われたのがその証拠、
秋の気配のずっと前に
庭で最初に葉を茶色くした。

私たちはこの木の早い終わりを
受け入れはしたけれど、
春だけが新しい命がうまれるのか
それとも無価値に火を炊くための材料になるのか
或いは杖の材料になるのか
明らかにしてくれる。

今私たちは寂しさを
この葉っぱのせいにしているけれど、
本当はもしかしたら
最後に示されるように
この葉っぱの内面の野獣は勇敢で、
もし4月の暖かい陽の下で
木が持ちなおすなら
最後に釣り下がっている貴方に
一番最初に礼をします。

The Birds' Safe Home 鳥の安全な家

So well camoflaged during summer,
we walked by the bird nest
countless times
without ever knowing
a family was busy at work
raising its young.

Even through autumn
and the winter months
we saw the tree every day
but never noticed
the evidence of the shell
of what must have been
a flurry of activity
through spring,
evidence of wisdom
of the birds' choice,
of calling the young
Red Oak their home.

For the younger oaks
tend to stubbornly hold
onto their leaves
until the new buds
of another growing season
push their old cover aside.

夏の間とても上手に隠されていた、
数え切れないほど
その鳥の巣の近くを通ったのに
鳥の一家が忙しく
雛たちを育てているとも知らずに。

秋から冬にかけての月々の間にも
毎日その木を見ていたのに
春にかけていろいろな
事柄が起きているとも
気が付かず
巣の存在も知らなかった、
若いレッドオークの木を
自分たちの家とした
鳥の選択は
知恵の証。

若いオークに関して言えば
次の季節が来て
若い芽が出てきて
古い覆いを取ってしまうまで
頑固に葉を付け続ける。

shows its white flowers in spring,
and grows quickly through summer,
featuring shiny green leaves and slender form
that take on a purple-red hue in autumn,
leaving only the berry-sized fruit
to bear the light touch
of a second night's hoarfrost.

In Michigan during the winter the deer gather in larger numbers. These deer were behind Professor Tut's Garden in the woods. I apologize for the poor focus, but it is a new camera and was my first attempt at catching wildlife in motion. As you can see from just this one herd of deer, we have many hungry mouths roaming through our garden...they come in close at night.

ミシガンでは、冬の間鹿たちは大きな群れになって行動します。この鹿たちはProfessor Tut's Gardenの裏の林にいました。うまくフォーカスされていなくてすみません。新しいカメラでワイルドライフを映画で撮るのは初めてでしたので。 この一団の鹿の群れをみて分かるとおり、たくさんの腹ペコたちが我が家の庭にもやってきます。特に家の近くまで来ます。 上記のサイトでその時のビデオを見ることが出来ます。

Northern White-cedar ノーザンホワイトシーダー

The Northern White-cedar, aka.,
Eastern White-cedar,
Eastern Arborvitae,
Thuja occidentalis,
is a favorite winter and spring snack
of the whitetail deer,
as the plentiful crops
of soybeans and corn
are last growing season's memory,
the deer look for any suitable vegetation
especially the shrubs and trees
that remain green throughout the year.

We have our defenses against the deer,
the collisions with cars take thousands each year,
and the arrows and bullets of hunters
thousands more;
but for those that survive (and they are many)
each gardener must choose his or her tactic,
feed them grains and seeds
and plant only those varieties
that the deer dislike,
or spray the peppers, the urines,
the rotten eggs, the bovine blood
in the hope that they'll graze elsewhere.

For us this winter's tactic is pictured above,
strands of my wife's lovely,
long, dark brown hair
wrapped among the branches ends,
among the tops of the smaller cedars;
for the deer do not like
the scent of humans,
nor do they appreciate a mouthful of hair,
yet last night's hoarfrost
turned the brown hair white
making it look more like
yummy rice noodles.

鹿の嫌いな植物だけを植えるか、
胡椒や尿をスプレーするか、
腐った卵や牛の血をまくか
どこか他の場所で食べることを願って
私たちはそれなりの防衛をする。

私たちの冬の対策は上の写真にあるとおり
私の妻の素敵な
長い、濃い茶色の髪の毛を
特にまだ若いシーダーの先っぽの
枝の先にまきつけること。
鹿は人間のにおいが嫌いで
口の中に髪が入るのが好きではないから。
でも昨夜の霜は
美味しい春雨のように
茶色い髪の毛を白くした。

The Squirrel Escapes リスの脱出

This squirrel, with one of friends not pictured,
had just fled from inside their home,
leaping among branches
and scampering down limbs
to gain fair distance
from the man that had come too close.

このリスは、ここには写っていない友達と、
家の中から脱走したところ
枝から枝へピョンピョン飛び跳ね
大枝を大急ぎでかけて行く
近くに来すぎた人から
十分な距離を取る為に。

Firewood 薪

One of our Wild Cherry trees
had a heavy low limb
that split from its trunk
during a summer storm.

Its redish hue a contrast
to the lingering snow
that struggles against the thaw,
while the small Elm limb rides shotgun.

Wild Cherry at Dusk たそがれのワイルドチェリー

The Black Cherry,
Prunus Serotina,
rises tall against
the blue Southern sky
that is quickly turning
toward the darker shades
that invite the moon to rise.

あっという間に

上っていく月を迎える
青い南の空に向かって
高くそびえ立つ。

Sparkling Facets キラキラした表面

It is amazing to think that each snowflake is unique
and that each is comprised of many facets,
and that the sparkles, flashes of the sun's reflection
are also one of a kind moving pictures
that will never be repeated,
for the movement of your eyes and the sun's position
relative to the complex array of facets
happens only once.

The sparkling facets are your own personal movie,
and as such are consistent with Ken Kesey's advice
that each of us should stay in our "own movie."

A Reassuring Snow 安心させる雪

Another dusting of snow,
like fingers of a cold hand
reaching gently
to reassure the seeds
that winter has not departed.

またの粉雪
冷たい手の指のように
優しく種を撫で、
まだ冬は過ぎていないよと
安心させている。


We now have six inches of snow on the ground...we are at approximately the same latitude as Mombetsu, Setana, Oshamanbe, Shiraoi and Churui, but we are quite a distance from major bodies of water, so our weather may be more like Sapporo or Obihiro? Remember to guess the date when our first flower will open...you can enter anytime up until February 2nd, Ground Hog Day (we are pretty sure no flowers will show before that!).

Hollicicle ヒイラギツララ

As frigid as January gets in Michigan
the sunny days tend to melt the snow
that lies upon the Southern roof,
producing waterfalls over frozen gutters,
cold, clear, almost freezing again mid-air,
sticky cold as it finds the Holly
already adorned by the previous storm,
yet the droplets dress the bush
as if it is to attend a more formal affair,
a winter ball to celebrate the cycles
of cold, warm, and colder still.

一月のミシガンは限りなく寒いけれど
陽の出ている日は
南方向の屋根の上の雪がとけ、
凍った雨どいから滝となり
冷たく、透明で、落ちていく途中で凍りそうになり、
前の嵐で既に着飾られたヒイラギに落ちるころには
くっつきそうに冷たくなる。
水滴はまるでもっとフォーマルな行事...
寒さ、暖かさ、そしてもっと寒いそのサイクルを祝う
冬の舞踏会に参加するように茂みを飾る。


Our family is having a contest in 2010 to see who can guess the date when the first flower will open in our garden. The winner will get to choose a plant and get to choose where to plant it in our garden this spring. We are also opening this contest to residents of Japan. The winner of this division will get a souvenier from Michigan. In addition, the overall winner will be proclaimed The Champion of the First Flower.

Just to be fair, we have various varieties of crocus, snowdrops, and other very early blooming bulbs planted. Our elevation is 250 meters and we located at approximately (rounded-up to the nearest half) 42.5 Latitude and 84 Longitude.

The Deer Track 鹿の跡

With five inches of snow resting upon the ground
the deer tend to drag their hooves
when they walk slowly,
browsing for food, or following sisters;
yet this same deer easily leaps five metres
with each bound when it scents danger
and then chooses to run back to from where it came,
knowing that flight and familiar terrain
is its safest choice to browse another day.

Patient Daisies 忍耐強いデイジー

This late summer, autumn bloomer
patiently waits to bring its daisies to light,

Now one week into January
the stalks, leaves and buds
bedraggled, twisted and brown,
yield their offering of seeds to the light,
like a well dressed celebrity walking the carpet.

この夏の終わり、秋に花咲く植物は
デイジーを開花するのを忍耐強く待ち、
冬の到来で身を切るように、
霜の指が花びらを枯らしてしまうまで

冬景色をやわらかくする。

Red Juniper 赤いビャクシン

The Eastern Redcedar
made its home here
in the abandoned fields
upon which cattle once grazed,
for the large boulders,
thought the farmers,
made this land unsuitable for crops.

So for now Juniperus virginiana
offers its sweet and resinous berries
to the birds that winter here,
among them blue jays and cardinals
causing quite a stir,
as they are drawn to the fruit that offers
one of January's rare splashes of color.
