South-Western Exposure 南西向き

The late January cycle

this year has been,

snow, clouds,

sun, clouds, snow;

and today the sun again

melts the snow,

making the icycles cry

because they know

their days are numbered,

with spring

just seven weeks away.

太陽、雲、雪、

そして今日はまた太陽

雪を溶かし、

氷柱を泣かせている

Apple Tree 林檎の木

Pruned long ago by a saw

the apple tree's scar

easily caught

the flying snow

that nestled

where it could.

ずっと前に鋸で切られた

林檎の木の傷が

居場所を探している

舞う雪を

簡単に捕まえた。

A Squirrel's Hideout リスの隠れ家

I reached up today

as high as I could,

placed the camera

in a hollow Red Oak

and took this shot

not knowing

what I would find.

出来る限り高くまで

手をのばして

レッドオークの穴に

カメラを向け

写真を撮った

何を見つかるか知らずに。

Catfish & Veggies ナマズと野菜

Saute yellow pepper, asparagus, portabella mushroom, tomato in olive oil and butter in a frying pan or wok.

Soak catfish in milk then drag through bread crumbs seasoned with fresh ground pepper and sea salt.
Place fish in baking pan covered in olive oil and butter, drizzle melted butter over top of fish.

Place pan near the upper middle of an oven pre-heated to 500. Cook for 8-12 minutes depending on thickness.

Serve

黄色いピーマン、アスパラガス、ポータベラマッシュルーム、トマトをオリーブオイルとバターでソテーします。

ナマズを牛乳に浸し、パン粉と、挽きたての塩とコショウで味付けをします。オリーブオイルとバターを焼き型にふり、そこに魚をおきます。溶かしたバターを、上にふりかけます。

型を500度（２６０C) にあたためておいたオーブンに入れ、8から12分、魚の厚さによって焼きます。

盛り付けをして、いただきます。

Powder on Leaf 葉の上の粉雪

Single digits,

crisp air,

and what seems like

a daily shower

of fluffy powder

is our reality...

so far from the garden

that swells and opens,

bursting with the love

and the color of Spring...

yet our solace

is the cleansing cold

that provides a needed rest

from the constant pulse

that we still so faintly hear.

現実…

ふくらみ、開花し

愛と春の色がはじける

庭には程遠く…

だが私たちの慰めは

まだかすかに聞こえる

Lavender Lane ラベンダーレーン

Lavender Lane is snow bound,

frozen yet used everyday

as we bring the firewood

into the kitchen

from the western hedgerow.

ラベンダーレーンが雪に埋もれている

凍っていても毎日使われている

西の垣根から

キッチンに薪を持ってくるために

The Winter Garden 冬の庭

The winter garden

blossoms in gray tones

bordered by

the brightest white,

sun on ice crystals

magnified and reflected

until the sun hides

and the moonless night comes

darker than one could imagine

given the enduring

blanket of snow.

冬の庭

灰色に花咲く

真っ白に

囲まれて、

氷の結晶の上の太陽

太陽が沈むまで

拡大され反射して

月のない夜が来る

長い間続く

雪の毛布があるにも関わらず

だれも想像できないほど暗い。

Heart of January 一月の真ん中

The heart of January

brings snow and cold

that piles so high

and reaches so low

that the deer

drag their feet

and forage as if

they were frozen peasants

scavenging deliberately,

ever so carefully.

一月の中旬が

高く積り

低いところも届く

雪と寒気を連れてきた

鹿が足を引きずり

食料を探す

まるで凍った

百姓たちのように

慎重に時間をかけて

あさる

The Little Creatures 小さな生き物たち

The little creatures

we never see

late at night

near dawn and dusk,

or quickly passing by at noon,

are revealed

by winter's rules

that lay down snow

and keep it cold,

capturing like fossils

every little movement.

夜明けや日暮れの

近くの夜に

それともお昼にさっと通り過ぎる

私たちが

見たことのない

小さな生き物たちが

雪に覆われて

冷たいままの

冬の決まりによって

明らかになった

すべての小さな動きを

化石のようにとらえて。

Path to the Wood 森への道

On winter nights

we take this path

to the wood

that rests against

the hedgerow,

where wild things lurk.

冬の夜

垣根に寄り掛かる

薪を取りに

私たちはこの道を通る

野生の生き物が隠れている所へ。

Winter Abstract 冬のアブストラクト

The setting was a Holly bush

resting for the winter

and blanketed in ice and snow,

or was it the deer

leaping from the hedgerow,

kicking up the powder

and dissappearing

into the wood?

氷と雪の毛布の下で
冬の間休んでいるシーン、
それとも
鹿が垣根から
ジャンプして
粉雪をまき散らし
森の中に
消えていったのだろうか？

Jumping on Powder 粉の上にジャンプ

Jumping on powder predawn,

unseen and unheard among the flurries

that float every which way

on their way to earth,

yet the tracks will take us,

eventually,

to the paws and claws

that passed in the dark.

夜明けの前に粉の上にジャンプ

地上に舞い降りる途中で

あちらにこちらに浮かぶ

見えない聞こえない小雪の中で

いずれかは

暗闇の中に向う

手足と爪のあとに

私たちを連れて行ってくれる。

The beauty and her entourage

have months to go

before the waves of warmth

will coax them to appear.

美と彼女の取り巻くものは

暖かい波が来て

彼らが出現するまで

誘導するのに何ヶ月もある

New Year's Treasure 新年の宝物

The hope within a seed

whether it becomes

the majestic tree,

or just a squirrel's meal

next week, next month,

or at the break of spring,

can mean the difference

between what was

a barren field

or a dull day

and a feast

within the cool shade.

種の中の希望

素晴らしい木になるか、

あるいは

来週の、来月の

または春休みの食事になるか。

不毛の地だった

さもなければ

どんよりした日だった日に

違いをもたらす

大きな影の

御馳走となって。

Last Day of 2010 ２０１０年の最後の日

December was cold in 2010,

snow came early and stayed

giving us weeks of play,

until on the last day

just the frame

of our snow tunnel remained.

2010年の12月は寒かった

雪は早来て、居残った、

私たちに何週間も遊ぶ時間をくれた

最後の日は

雪のトンネルの周りだけが

残った。
