Spring Loving Snowmen 春を愛する雪だるまたち

Their smiles belie the warming weather,

for after all, without it

they would have remained

just powder on the ground,

and they know life is fleeting,

better to go standing

with a warm smile knowing

that spring is in the air.

彼らの笑顔は暖かい天気と反する

結局のところ、

地上にある粉として

いるしかないのだから

そして彼等は人生がはかないものだと

知っている

春が空気に包まれていることで

笑って立つのが

一番だと知っている。

Head Above Ice 氷の上の頭

These days it's been snow,

a foot, then inches,

then inches more:

but we've had a few moments

to clear the walks,

to dust off the solar lights

that eagerly capture

the winter sun

to make dusk

and the hours beyond

a sparkling array

of kinetic display. 

最近はずっと雪

30cm、そして数センチ

そしてまた数センチ

でも幾度か玄関の前の

小道の雪かきをした

一生懸命

冬の太陽を捕まえる

ソーラーライトの

雪を落とし

夕暮れから

その後の何時間を

キラキラ並んだ

動的なディスプレーを楽しむ

Among the Spruce

the light does wander

taking the path it's given,

so fast, so still,

powerful

and dependent,

transient tracks

submitted.

トウヒの間で

光が散歩する

与えられた道を通り

すごく早く

すごくじっとして

力強く

依存して

一時的な小道を

提供してくれる

Lavish Heaping 豪勢に積る

Nature's lavish heaping of snow upon us,

came suddenly and hard through afternoon,

evening and morning hours just three days ago,

falling thick and blowing hard until a foot had gathered,

daring us to push it around, pick it up,

mold it how we would until the sun calls a peace

that falls upon us all as we melt slowly,

back from whence we came.

自然の豪勢な雪積り

3日前に

突然来て

午後夜そして朝にかけて

30cm積るまで

沢山降り強く吹いた

太陽が平和を呼び

私たちが来たところへ

ゆっくり溶かすまで

押して、持ち上げて

かたち造れるものなら

やってごらん、と息巻く。

First 2011 Sprouts 2011年初の芽

The first bulbs

have sprouted,

all the snow has melted

except in the cold

northern exposure realms,

while the ground has

warmed elsewhere

for these few February days,

just long enough

to allow the release

of all this energy

designed to thrive,

to reach to the sun,

then flower to show

the reason behind it all.

最初の球根の

芽が出た

北を向いた

寒い周辺を除いて

雪はとけた

この2月の数日間

地面は暖かくなり

それは

成長すべき

エネルギーが

発せられるのに十分で

太陽に向かって伸び

花が咲き

すべての理由を

明らかにする

Nature's Chain 自然の鎖

Cascading links of nature

joining each seed,

each generation,

with chain-like delicate grace,

well lit and still,

posing in the foreground

while the sky

and its clouds

offer heaven-like canvas,

reminding us

of bright days of fall

that owned our hearts

and treated our eyes

to the warmth and color

of refined maturity.

ひとつひとつの種をつなげる

それぞれの世代を、

明るく照らされてじっとし

空と雲による

天のようなキャンバスの

Juniper Needle Craters 杜松の針のクレーター

Shedding its winter coat
the Juniper falls
bit by bit
into the drifts of snow,
and each needle
with its absorbed heat
and motion stirred by wind
carves its very own crater.
 
冬のコートを落として
杜松が少しずつ
雪の吹き溜まりに
落ちていく、
そしてそれぞれの針は
熱を持ち
風で吹かれて
ユニークなクレーターを彫る。

February Sunset in the Garden 庭での2月の夕暮れ

The sunset is common,
washing across the earth
at all times occurring,
sometimes grey just dimming,
other times clear skies
with a rainbow of colors fading;
but it's the scene
and the clouds
that give the moment flavor,
and like a well spiced stew,
just the right ingredients
amounts of light, surroundings and cloud
bring out the warmth
and the amazement,
turning a common event
into one so brilliant.
 
夕暮れは別に特別なものではない
地球上を洗い流すそれは
いつも起きている
時にはただ単に灰色が薄暗くなり
あるときにはまっさらな空が
虹色になって消えていく
でも背景と雲が
その瞬間を
特別なものにする
まるでよく味つけられた
丁度良い材料で作られた
シチューのように、
光の量、周りの環境と雲が
暖かさと
驚嘆を引き出し
ただのイベントを
素晴らしいものにする。
 

Spring at the End of the Tunnel トンネルの向こうは春

The coldest day

of the year just passed;

and we know that

within a week

the rain will fall;

and we'll emerge

from the ice and snow,

that has had its

way with us

in 2011.

are looking around

for Spring.

THE Deer Left Scraps 鹿が破片を残す

The deer are getting more desparate

as the snow deepens

and the cold stretches into single digits.

Cedars that had been fairly full

just the day before,

have been made a midnight snack.

A frigid snowy January

transitioning into a colder

snow laden February

tests the resourcefulness

of the deer in the garden.

雪が深まるにつれ

一桁の寒さが長引くにつれ

鹿たちは絶望的になっている。

昨日まで

葉がたくさん付いていたのに

夜食となり消えてしまった。

極寒の雪降る1月が

もっと寒く雪で一杯の

2月に入っていき

庭の鹿たちの

資質を試している。

Heather Brown in the morning light

showed her age and grace,

for she had been too delicate,

biten by the hard cold

and dried by the winter winds

until only a few remembered

what she had been known for

in her youth.

朝陽の中のヘザーブラウン
年と優雅さを見せてくれた
彼女はデリケートすぎて
厳しい寒さにやられ
冬の風邪で乾いてしまった
ほんの一握りの人たちしか
彼女の若さの盛りを知らない。

The Blizzard of 2011 2011年の雪嵐

By the time evening fell

with a few centimeters of snow,

we had a 30 centimeter base;

yet for all the dire predictions

only 9 more fell

in a night and day's time.

Seems we had been on the edge

between the deeper drifts

and the ice spanked Ohio.

It had howled last night

moving things,

houses and homes,

that usually

rest quiet and still,

yet the beasts

of the night

that usually lurk

browse and feed,

rested curled so tight

that their tails

covered their eyes.

夜には既に

数センチの雪が降り

30cmの基礎を作った

切迫した予報では

夜から昼間にかけて

あと9cmだけ降るとのこと。

どうやら私たちは

深い吹き溜まりと

オハイオを襲った氷の

間の端にいるようだ。

昨夜は風の唸り声が凄かった

物を動かす音

通常静かでじっとしている

家々を、

だがいつもは

ひっそりと動いて

食物を探す

夜の野獣は

ギュッと丸くなり

尻尾で目を隠して

休んでいた。
