After Thanksgiving

the Christmas decorations

begin to go up.

It's a shame to think

it would be a surprise

to have a month

of Peace on Earth.

感謝祭が終わり

クリスマスのデコレーションが

始まる。

地上に平和の宿る

月が来るのが

驚きだなんて

残念なことだ。

A Nearly December Daisy 殆ど12月のデイジー

November 28 in Michigan

and the very last Daisy

looks a bit like a shrouded woman,

elderly, wary of what is to come,

yet beautiful in a design

that is highlighted by the Southern sun

that sinks closer to the horizon each day.

Had we not cared to cut

the spent flowers back in July,

the second flowering

would not have come

and we would have never known

this beauty and pleasure

on the doorstep of winter.

is beginning to fail

after decades of giving shade,

its bark is peeling

providing this fungus opportunity

where once there was none.

So we thank the Elm

for its years of cooling grace

and we ponder whether we have

one, two, or a few more years

to feel the cool breezes

swirling beneath it.

Hard to imagine
after all this time,
growing season past,
moving toward Winter
in the Northern states
and still blossoming;
taking what light it can
and turning it
to beauty.

beauty,

and a bright

optimism

that takes us back

and the frosts have come

taking the weaker annuals,

curling and browning them

like bacon,

leaving only a few

of the perennials

left to service the bees

that must be wondering

when their work will end.
