Whatever happened to the shooting star,
it found its place upon the earth,

And as wonderous as the heavens are
this star is thrilled to be so close
to what on earth has come thus far,
the birth and growth of one fine life.

流れ星に何が起こったのかわからないけど、
地上に場所を見つけ、

Purple Crocus

Michigan winters have much to offer
those who enjoy outdoor activities
associated with frozen lakes,
snow covered hills, forests and meadows.

It is a season of cleansing,
a period of dormancy that offers advantage
to the creatures best aligned with the rigors
of frigid wind swept environs,
yet winter's greatest gift
is its ability to set the stage for spring;

by prevailing upon us with
harsh conditionsand overwhelming persistence,
it ingrains within each of usthe ability to endure
and imparts the pleasure of anticipation,
such that each one of us
that has been subject to

its dark and cold whimsis gifted, often so suddenly,

the stark contrast of spring

that rains warmth and light

from the heavens,
allowing life to burst from the earth,

to well from the once dormant limbs and buds,

showering us with an array of colors,

myriad shades of green -

surprising us at times

as if we had forgotten it was possible,

while allowing us to confirm with our senses,

our eyes washed with rainbows,

our ears bombarded with the sounds

of returning birds, peeping frogs,

our lungs filled with the warming air,

our noses swept into streams of sweet scents,

and our toes freed from boots,

allowed to press into the warm

and greening grasses.

For this we thank the winter,

for without the tribulations it presents

our pleasures would surely be diminished.

ミシガンの冬は凍った湖、

雪で覆われた丘、森、牧草地に関連した
アウトドアーアクティビティーを

楽しむ人たちにとって

沢山を与えてくれる。

それは洗浄の季節であり、

植物が育たない時期であるが、

ある動物たちにとって

冷たい風などの過酷な環境は

休みを与えてくれる時でもある。

だがなんと言っても一番の贈り物は
春のお膳立てができること。

それは苛酷な環境と計り知れない粘り強さを

私たちに強要し
一人一人に耐える力を与え
期待という喜びを授け
各々がその暗く冷たいムードにいる中

たいていの場合突然

天からあたたかさと光という

　春の大きなコントラストを贈る。

それは地上から生命がほとばしるうようにさせ

かつて休眠ちゅうだった

大枝やつぼみを大きくさせ

私たちに沢山の色を見せてくれる

無数の緑色を...
まるで私たちがそんなことできるのを忘れてしまったように
時折驚かせると共に
私たちの感覚に確認させる...
目は虹に洗われ、
戻ってきた鳥たち、ケロケロ鳴くカエルたちによって
耳は攻撃され、
肺はあたたかい空気で一杯になり、
鼻は流れ出る甘い香りの中に入り、
足の指はブーツから解き放たれ
あたたかく緑になってきた芝生を
踏みしめることができるようにしてくれる。

このために私たちは
冬に感謝する
それが引き起こす困難なしでは
よろこびは少なくなってしまうだろうから。

My wife spotted these
the original flowers -
Crocus bloom today.

Masumi who had guessed the first
flowers would bloom March 20th, came
the closest to guessing the exact date.
Congratulations Masumi!

The Competition II コンペ第2弾

 

It has been eight days since "The Competition"
and these shoots (although smaller then) were
featured on Friday March 5th.

Eight days later and they have made some
progress as they are located in a well
mulched bed that has red brick to its
North and a Southern exposure.

Competing plants are beginning to spring-up
throughout the garden, but for now this
group has the early lead.

It looks like Masumi 3/20; Namino 3/25;
and Masako 4/7 have the best chance of
winning the contest, although Masako may
have guessed a little late as this coming
week the forecast is for sun and temperatures
reaching 16 degrees C. Don't feel bad
though Masako, I guessed 2/27.

前回のコンペから8日経ちました。
これらの芽は3月5日の金曜日に
（もっと小さかったけれど)取り上げられました。

8日経ち、成長が見られるのも
北に赤レンガの壁があり、
南向きで腐葉土でちゃんと
覆われているからです。

庭のいたるところで
植物が競うように誕生していますが
今のところ、このグループが一番リードしています。

どうやら、ますみの3/20、なみのの3/25、
まさこの4/7がコンテストの優勝者になりそうですが、
まさこさんの予想は少し遅すぎたかもしれません。
天気予報によると、来週は
晴れで16度近くなるようだからです。
でも、がっかりしないでください。私の予想は
2/27でしたので。
