Bladder Campion シラタマソウ

Our theory of garden

is Random Balance,

which means we allow

the wildflowers in,

to an extent,

yet try to provide some balance

in terms of color, texture,

size and bloom time.

Our garden is an experiment,

a "work in progress" everywhere,

nowhere exclusive,

nowhere perfect.

So we let the Bladder Campion

have its days of bloom,

for Silene cucubalus

has been here before,

as it will again be...

before long.

The morning light treats us

to another view of the

partial shade garden

that sits beneath the Elm

and borders the front walk

and driveway.

The Season of the Butterfly 蝶の季節

Mid-summer brings the butterflies,

with the Phlox, Butterfly Bush,

and the invasive Purple Lupine

flashing their attractive colors

across the Michigan horizon.

夏の中旬、蝶たちがやってくる

フロックス、バタフライブッシュ、

そして侵略的な紫のルピナスと共に

ミシガンの地平線の到る所で

魅力的な色を輝かせて。

The white Phlox seem suspended

above the green backdrop

that reflects and absorbs light,

creating its own beauty.

Aging Beauty 年をとっていく美しいもの

Summer has been a good season

for this aging beauty,

for she has bloomed long and strong,

offering us so many layers

and features of grace,

that even in her mature days,

she offers us color,

complexity and strength

この年をとっていく美人にとって

夏は良い季節

長く強く花を咲かせ

たくさんのレイヤーと

気品を私たちに見せてくれた

成熟した今でさえ

色と、複雑さと

強さを見せている

The Baby Giant Pumpkin 巨大なかぼちゃの赤ちゃん

Even the grandest living things

start out small,

as do the biggest ideas often;

a scribbled note,

a thought dawning

cool and quiet at first,

before growing in scale

and in ways

that may or may not

have ever been imagined.

どんなに巨大な生き物も

小さく始まる

大きなアイディアと同じように、

書き走りをしたノート

クールで静かな

考えの始まりから

今まで考えもしなかった

ような凄いスケールに

なったりするように。

Rainbow 虹

Today it rained as hard

and the sun shone as hard

as it ever had...

and if you imagine

that these hard rains

and the same hot sun

bathe the earth each day,

then it was just our day

to be chased and pinned,

eyes to the sky

and mind

to the beauty.

今日雨がとても強く降った

そして太陽が今までに

ないほど強く輝いた...

そして強い雨と

同じ熱い太陽が

地球を毎日覆うと

考えてみて、

そしてこの日は

Tiger Lilly and Friend タイガーリリーと友達

The Tiger Lilly,

or Day Lilly,

blooms for just one day

before closing and wilting the next

and shrivelling and drying

after that.

It has its moment

and lives it,

as we all do

in our own scales;

but like us,

it is the collective that lasts,

some coming early

and burning fast

in the hot June sun,

while others wait

taking their time to grow,

sheltered by the partial shade

until the end of July nears;

and then the last one

blooms and dies...

for even the collective

has its life span.

またの名をデイリリー

一日だけ咲く

閉じてしおれる前に

そしてその後

しなびて枯れる。

それは一瞬

それを生きる、

私たちがみな

自分の基準でするように

でも私たちと同じように

生き残るのは集団で

あるものは早く来て

早く燃えてしまう

熱い６月の太陽の下、

あるものは遅く来て

時間をかけて大きくなる

７月の終わりが近づくまで

半日蔭に隠れて

そして最後のものが

咲き、死ぬ

皆の集まりが

一生を生きるのだけれど。

The young Phlox,

after a hard night's rain,

is lush, vivid and bursting.

若いフロックス

The Fawn Has Learned to Run 走ることを学んだ小鹿

To flee as free

as youth,

as fawn,

as conscious creation,

to think air, leap,

and to leave earth

beneath and behind.

自由な身として、

若い身として、

小鹿として、

意識をしている創造物として、

空気のことを考え、

飛躍し、逃げる、

下と後ろにある地を

後にして。

July Makes Me Smile ７月は私を微笑ませる

Daisies are bright this summer,

mounding toward the sun

and following it

across the skies

that break loose

this time of year,

blue, then white,

then dark, ominous,

explosive and wet...

and so fresh afterward,

each breath charged

with clean and endless air.

今年の夏、デイジーが明るい、

太陽に向かって山のようになり

そしてそのあとには

空が続く

この季節に

ワイルドになる

青、そして白、

それから暗くなり、脅かすように

激変し、濡れて…

その後はとても総会になり、

澄んだ限りない空気を

思いっきり充電する

The Elderly Clematis 年配のクレマティス

Wispy seeds

this time of year

catch updrafts,

forged by hot sun

and yielding earth,

and received by all

that would dare

to be lighter

than air.

この季節の

ふわふわの種は

熱い太陽と

実を産出する地とでつくられた

上昇気流を捕まえ

それよりも軽い

すべてのものに

受け入れられる。

Ocean of Fern シダの海

The waves come in

from a blurred horizon,

growing larger,

more acute as they near

where our feet

touch the sand...

and the sound they make

is deafening,

as if we had been there

forever,

having lost our senses

altogether.

波が来た

次第に大きくなって

私たちの足が

砂につくほど近くなるにつれ

もっと鋭くなり。。。

そしてその音は

とても大きく

耳を聞こえなくする

まるで私たちが

そこにずっといるかのように

Our First Cucumbers 初胡瓜

One of our first cucumbers

went well with the tomato,

basil pizza,

giving us a mild blast

of garden fresh

to mingle with the Italian.

Young Asparagus 若いアスパラガス

The first sprout of these Asparagus,

planted in June,

comes up fine and fern-like,

a delicate precursor

to the edible spears

that will surface

in the years to come.

６月に植えた

細くてシダのように出てきた

これから先何年にわたり

出現する食べられる芽の

繊細な先駆者

The Giant Pumpkin 巨大な南瓜

The bees love these blooms,

like kids manically dancing on air

they dart, rub, buzz and collect

all the good pollen here...

deep in the middle,

of what promises to be

the beginnings

of something big.

蜂はこの花たちが大好き

子供たちがいかれて宙を踊るように

飛び、こすり、うなり、

良い花粉をみんな集める

The Great Grandmother's Phlox ひいおばあちゃんのフロックス

History from Cleveland

has its beauty blooming now,

having come so far,

so many seasons passed

in places varied and sunny,

yet this bloom never seems to weaken.

クリーブランドからの歴史が

今美しく花咲く

こんなにも遠くにきて

たくさんの四季を経て

陽のあたる様々な場所で

それでも弱ることを知らない花

First Tomato 初トマト

Margo found our first ripe tomato yesterday,
a small Cherry Tomato about the size of a penny.
We split it this morning and each ate a sweet tasty piece.

マルゴが昨日最初の熟したトマトを見つけた、
小さいチェリートマト、ペニー（１セントコイン）くらいの大きさ。
今朝、半分に切って２人で甘いトマトを堪能した。

waits patiently during spring

saving its bright blooms

for the heat of mid-summer

bringing them until the fall.

Baby Bunny Flees ウサギの赤ちゃんが逃げる

This baby bunny

is one of very many

that flee before me.

The Hollyhock falls

to the ravages of time

that accelerate

under pressure of disease,

a living skeleton now.

Landing Pad Among the Lavender ラベンダーの中の着陸場

On July 5th

the bee found a landing pad

among the lavender...

a daisy for which

at that moment

a better use

could not be imagined.

Thistle looks for homes,
an opportunist for sure;
here under a pine
it found a safe place to hide
and now it seeks out the sun.
