In spring this barrel
is planted with annuals,
but for now just snow.

春になったら
この樽には一年草が植えられるけど
今は雪だけ。

Shy Yew 恥ずかしがり屋のイチイ

 

Hicksii' taxus x media
may one day grow
to more than 3 meters,
but for now
at just under one,
she is a bit shy.

イチイは
いつの日か
3メートル以上になるけれど、
今は1メートルにも届かず、
まだ彼女は恥ずかしがり屋さん。

The Junipers Bend ビャクシンの屈曲

These Junipers
victims in the past,
one losing its top
to snow and ice,
the other taken
by thunderstorm;
resigned now
to bend ever more,
in tribute to
the tremendous weight,
delivered from the heavens.

このビャクシンは
過去の犠牲者、
あるものは雪と氷で
頂を失い、
他のものは嵐で倒れ、
天から送られてきた
物凄い重さに因んで、
更なる屈曲を
あきらめてしまった。

Heavy Snow 重い雪

 

Heavy snow again
drags the tree limbs
toward the earth,
and we bow also
to its pristine beauty.

またの大雪
木の枝を
地面に向かって引っ張って、
私たちもその本来の美しさに
お辞儀をする。

Respite from the Winter Garden 冬の庭から一息お休み

 

The winter garden
is snow filled cold tonight,
but our fire is warm.

standing hollow and dormant,
gray tombstones of life.

A Sprig of Mint ミントの小枝

 

Captured and encased
by the ice
one freezing drip
at a time,
until like a
daylight stalagmite,
the sprig of mint
points accusingly
toward the source
of its winter
imprisonment.

氷によって
一回に付き
一粒の凍ったしずくに
つかまえられて包み込まれた、
昼間の石筍のようになるまで
ミントの小枝は
冬と言う監禁の
源に向かって
責めるように
指さしている。

Deer Highway 鹿の高速

 

Deer used our yard
as a highway late last night,
their road to find food.

Fresh Excavation 新しい発掘

 

This hole appeared after the big snowfall. Although a Red Oak leaf is pictured nearby, the hole is under a Black Walnut tree. We are not sure who has been digging, maybe a ground squirrel? この穴は大雪の後にできた。レッドオークの葉が近くに見えるけれど、この穴はブラックウォールナッツの木の下にある。一体誰が穴を掘っているんだろう。多分リスかな?

Snowfall on sundial

The Morning Owl 朝のふくろう

 

The morning owl swooped in
from the Western fields,
perching above the garden,
waiting for desert
after a night of hunting.

I guessed it to be
a Short-eared Owl,
for it was Crow-sized
and long winged,
a blackish patch
surrounding each eye...
and I never saw its ears.

朝のふくろうが
西の野原から急降下してきた
庭の上の木に止まり
夜の狩猟後の
デザートを待っている。

これはコミミズクではないかと
思うのだけれど
カラスの大きさで
長い羽を持っていて
目の周りが黒っぽいから...
でも耳は見えなかった。

Hens and Chicks ヘンズ＆チックス

 

Some windows
are larger than others,
and some offer art,
stained glass
crafted painstakingly.

Others yield to the shadow
of plain and ordinary,
while yet others lend
spectacular views,
of Paris, of oceans
of cloud banks on high,
or like the space station's
observation room,
windows sentenced
to exclusive use,
a shame
considering the subjects,
heaven and earth.

Then of course
there are windows of time,
moments that are
or could have been,
opportunities forged
or chances passed,
and nature offers these,
sometimes combining the two,
for here we see
the hens and chicks
in a way that had
never been,
but for serendipity.

他のより大きく
あるものはアートを
きめ細やかにつくられた
ステンドグラスのようだ。

他のものたちは
ただ単につまらない影に
譲るだけ
あるものたちは
素晴らしい眺めを
巴里、海、高いところにある大きな雲
を映しているというのに
或いは宇宙ステーションの
観望室のように
特別なことだけに使われる
ものもある
天と地という対象があるのに
なんと残念なこと。

そしてもちろんそこには
時の窓がある
今このときか、
可能性のあったあの時
機会が築かれた時、
チャンスを失ったとき
自然がこれらをくれた
時によっては２つあわせて。
だってここで
今まで見たことのないような
ヘンズ＆チックスという
素晴らしいものに
偶然に出会えたのだから。

Dragon Flies トンボ

 

In winter this pair
looks like dragon flies joining
for seasonal dance.

This is the P.J.M. Rhododendron x,
with glossy leaves hinting red
as if flushed with the chill
of a February's dawn,
waiting patiently for early spring
to bring the pair's blooms
together.

トンボのよう

光る葉は
2月の夜明けの寒さで
紅潮したかのように赤くなり
ペアーの花が一緒に咲く

プロフェッサータットのチリ

 

レシピ
ポーク　　　　　　　450ｇ
玉ねぎ　　　　　　　3個
ガーリック　　　　　5かけ
ブロッコリ　　　　　3つ
ジャガイモ　　　　　6個
トマト　　　　　　　２個
ダイストマト缶　　　１缶
トマトソース　　　　２缶
ブラックビ－ンズ　　１缶
キドニービーンズ　　１缶
塩　　　　　　　　　小さじ１
チリパウダー　　　　大さじ１
シナモン　　　　　　小さじ１
チーズ　　　　　　　お好みで
サワークリーム　　　お好みで


この量で多分８人から１０人分作れます。
オリーブオイルを大きな鍋にいれ玉ねぎを炒めます。
その間にポークを一口サイズに切り、フライパンでまわりが少し茶色くなるまで炒めます。
ポークを玉ねぎの入った鍋に入れます。
全ての野菜を一口サイズに切ります。
トマトの缶とビーンズの缶を鍋に入れます。
沸騰したら火を弱めて全ての野菜を入れます。
野菜が柔らかくなってきたら全てのパウダー系を入れます。
それから最低30分ほど煮て出来上がり。
お好みでトッピングとしてチーズとサワークリームをのせてください。

チーズとサワークリームを入れると、スパイシーさが軽減されてまろやかで食べやすくなります。

もともとこのレシピはポークではなくて牛ひき肉を使うのですが、たまたまポークを使ったら、あっさりして私好みだったので、それ以来我が家はポークです。どっしりしたほうがよければ牛肉のひき肉を使ってください。半々でもいいです。時間が経ったほうが美味しいので、一日目はポーク、2日目に牛を入れると言うのもありですね。これはいつも我が家では男が作ることになっています。

作っている間に赤ワインを召し上がれ。一緒にガーリックブレッドを食べても美味しいです。

沢山作って冷凍も可能です。

The Crab Harvest Gold,
Malus x 'Hargozam'
has but a few small fruit
remaining,
and like its neighbor
the apple tree,
its bright yellow fruit
that flashes gold in autumn,
has now turned red,
laying a fine carpet
upon which winter's
celebrity may tread,
our first February snow.

クラブハーベストゴールド、
またの名をMalus x 'Hargozam'、
は少しの実を残して
後は何もなく、
秋に黄色い実を金色に光らせる
ご近所さんの林檎の木のように
今は赤く染まり、
冬のセレブリティ－、
２月の最初の雪のために
上等なじゅうたんを敷いている。

Crossroads 交差点

 

The deer crossed paths here last night, and now and then the snow and the sun cross paths, melting, crusting, and then melting again...making the garden shine like a glazed doughnut...if only the deer could have tasted that, we would have seen much more than their hooves breaking crust.　昨夜鹿がこの道を通った。そして時々雪が太陽がここを横切り、溶けては、かたまり、そしてまた解けて...庭をグレーズドドーナッツのようにつやつやさせる。鹿がそれを味わうことさえ出来ればきっとそのひづめがクラストを壊すよりもっといろいろ見られるはずなのに。
