The Myth of the Elk ヘラジカの伝説

 

Before man inhabited Southern Michigan,
the Father Elk walked freely
among the trees in the forest.
Not long after man's arrival,
the elk fled to the Northern country,
but before they all left,
the last elk standing bowed his head
to the ground and buried his rack,
leaving it behind as he hurried to catch
his brothers and sisters.

The following spring
and for every year after,
this strong shrub has grown here
as a tribute to the Father Elk
whose forest this once was.

人がミシガンの南部に居住する前に、
ヘラジカの父は
森の中を自由に歩き回っていた。
人が到来してから間もなく、
ヘラジカは北に移動した、
だが皆が脱出する前に
最後の一頭は立って
地面に向かって頭を垂れ
角を埋めたまま行ってしまった、
兄弟姉妹を急いで追いかけて。

その次の春
そしてその後毎年、
この強い生垣はここで成長してきた、
かつてここを森としていた
ヘラジカの父の記念として。
