The Birds' Safe Home 鳥の安全な家

So well camoflaged during summer,
we walked by the bird nest
countless times
without ever knowing
a family was busy at work
raising its young.

Even through autumn
and the winter months
we saw the tree every day
but never noticed
the evidence of the shell
of what must have been
a flurry of activity
through spring,
evidence of wisdom
of the birds' choice,
of calling the young
Red Oak their home.

For the younger oaks
tend to stubbornly hold
onto their leaves
until the new buds
of another growing season
push their old cover aside.

夏の間とても上手に隠されていた、
数え切れないほど
その鳥の巣の近くを通ったのに
鳥の一家が忙しく
雛たちを育てているとも知らずに。

秋から冬にかけての月々の間にも
毎日その木を見ていたのに
春にかけていろいろな
事柄が起きているとも
気が付かず
巣の存在も知らなかった、
若いレッドオークの木を
自分たちの家とした
鳥の選択は
知恵の証。

若いオークに関して言えば
次の季節が来て
若い芽が出てきて
古い覆いを取ってしまうまで
頑固に葉を付け続ける。
