A Rose on November 11th North of Ann Arbor
This rose is so sweet
in its surprise,
yet bitter in knowing
it may never open,
having come so late,
nearly kissing winter.

Waving Goodbye
Waving goodbye
to another warm
growing season
that has endured
far longer than
normal it seems.
Yet even in goodbye
there can be grace
beauty,
and a bright
optimism
that takes us back
to beginnings
filled with hope
and promise.

A Warm Michigan Autumn
Into November a full week
and the frosts have come
taking the weaker annuals,
curling and browning them
like bacon,
leaving only a few
of the perennials
left to service the bees
that must be wondering
when their work will end.

After Midnight
In this late Autumn garden
the Cone Flower hides
among the filtered light
that makes its way
past the taller plants
that have begun
their retreat;
for by the clock
of the growing season,
it is after midnight.

The Missing Twin
The twins dropped their hats
and when they knelt to the ground to pick them up,
Mr. Squirrel gave the smaller of the two a ride.

Red Maple
Crimson for the heart
of Autumn,
for the cooling nights
lengthening
day by day
giving way to
the winds that sweep
in swells of time
drawing the blinds closed
on the brightness
passing;
and in these moments
the Red Maple blushes
as if the elements
of mid-fall had gathered,
to flatter her blindly.

Fresh Green Tomatoes
Late October cradle me
in your sunshine
on this vine,
and promise me
that you'll hold your frost
for another year,
leaving the ice
sleet and blowing snow
to your aged brother,
windy and wet,
November, so cold.

All Rain is Divine
All rain is divine as is the sunshine
that falls in waves and particles
at speeds varied by design;
and likewise we receive their call
softly pelting, burning slowly,
ever so into our minds
where they stay together
finding solace,
does it really matter,
if it rains?
One Last Look
The old Oak
and Hickory
warm the hedgerow
as they greet the sun
that keeps its head lower now
as it chases another season of birth
far to the South.
Yet it gives these trees
one last look
of splendid display,
of glowing aura,
that softens the scene
before giving way
to the stark and gray.

beautiful.

Mrs. October - Black Eyed Susan
Another summer flower
that has lasted this year
well into autumn,
plays coy among
the daisy leaves
that partially block
the morning sun.

Ring of Wild
Ring of wild
traces elegance
among the weeds
that have clamored
for sunshine
from dawn to dusk
through seasons
warming, warm
and cooling,
now retreating
toward the long angles
of a passing
autumn's failing.
Yet this artistry
of bland weed
aside the wooded path
speaks of order,
adaptation
so appealing,
as if a troop
of well trained
dancers
had their magic,
a climatic moment,
captured neatly
with curtain closing.
Moon Flower
This variety of Morning Glory
blooms by the light of the moon.
This year has been unusual
for all our Morning Glory varieties,
as only a few have bloomed once thus far,
and they all waited until October to do so.

Roasting Marshmallows
Any quiet evening
after all have supped
is a good time
for "smores."
Our version last night
was two roasted marshmallows,
sandwiched between
the two halves
of one graham cracker
with a fat square
of dark chocolate
laced with orange peel
and almond.
Any quiet evening
when the wind is down,
is a good time
for smores.

Red Sedum
The Red Sedum has blushed,
its cheeks full red
at hearing
what must have been
one of Autumn's
colorful jokes.
For Autumn plays with us,
offering a taste
of what has been
while hinting early
at frosts,
that will come harder
much later.

Sassafras Turning
Early fall
filled with light
and rain,
these fleeting days
play well to the
angling sun,
that warms
the turning leaves,
fed no more.
Yet they in turn
feed our eyes
and warm our hearts,
bringing measured
yearning
for just a sliver more
of a summer lasting,
just now passing.
